The 'Annotations' Series

This series of mixed media collages incorporates old book pages, most of which have been annotated by previous readers, including me. I tend to buy used paperbacks of Shakespeare's plays for that very reason. It's fascinating to read others' opinions and interpretations scrawled in the margins or between the lines. Many of the pages are taken from French literature, which I studied in college. The paintings contain multiple layers of thin, transparent paint, often in golds and deep reds. On some the surface has been 'distressed' by scratching through the paint with 'sgraffiti'. Several are heavily varnished to give the colors even more depth.
