Diana Britt Pasadena, CA
For most of my life, I have been an “art
dabbler.” I have dabbled in calligraphy, pottery, needlepoint, weaving, and
assorted other fiber arts, collage and painting, all the while traveling,
photographing, and collecting folk art and textiles. All of this was satisfying,
but not particularly consuming. In 1999, as I prepared to retire from a
stressful job in one of California’s largest bureaucracies, I was diagnosed
with breast cancer. Suddenly, I became acutely conscious of the fact that I had
traded creativity and the expression of who I am for the safety and security of
a career and its attendant benefits – and that I could not afford to
waste more time in redressing the balance. So I'm not!
The painting below about from a misunderstanding of an earlier assignment
on series. I thought this meant images and text that would carry a story through
a series, so I energetically amassed images and text to do that, only to find
out the series assignment was something else altogether. So when it came time to
do the final painting, I had all these lovely materials about our gorgeous
setting in Sedona, Arizona, so I used them to create this highly colored image
of Sedona, past and present..
